ABBIE SUNTER
Abbie Sunter is multi-media artist specialising in ceramic sculpture. Drawing heavily on the themes of folklore, myths and legends, her work aims to reconnect the viewer to nature through memories of place and the familiarity of folklore.
Moving to Derby in 2010, Abbie studied for her BA in Fine Art at the University of Derby. After completing her bachelor’s degree, she began taking part in artist residencies and exhibitions across the country. In 2013 she found herself working for another Derby Uni alumni on a “secret project” – this turned out to be the now internationally known “Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red”, otherwise known as the poppy project at the Tower of London in 2014.
After several years of working for another artist, she decided to take the leap and open her own studio at Banks Mill. Since then, Abbie has continued to push her practice forward, exhibiting around the country and even selling her work to customers as far away as Texas and Las Vegas.
In 2022, she returned to university to study for her MA in Art (Fine Art & Photography), for which her final major project received the Artcore Emerging Artist Award and she recently graduated with a Distinction.
Abbie now continues to work at Banks Mill Studios as a member of staff, supporting new and emerging artists through their own creative journeys and continues to expand her own artistic practice
